China business trip checklist for trade fair visitors
What to sort out before you fly to a trade fair in mainland China: entry rules, internet access, payments and where to stay.
1. Visa and entry
79 nationalities can currently enter mainland China visa‑free for short business trips. Most others need a business (M) visa; Canton Fair buyers can request an invitation letter after registering.
Check the rule for your passport
Always check the National Immigration Administration and your nearest Chinese embassy or visa centre before booking.
2. Internet: eSIM and VPN
Google, WhatsApp, Gmail and many Western apps are blocked on mainland networks and hotel Wi‑Fi. Two common fixes: an eSIM whose data routes through Hong Kong, or a VPN installed before you arrive.
3. Payments
Most shops and taxis expect Alipay or WeChat Pay. Both now accept international cards — set them up and verify your identity before you travel.
4. Hotels near the venue
Book as soon as your dates are fixed; prices near major venues rise during fairs.
